Fish City Poker Run
Fundraisers take to the waves for LBF
This game of poker with a difference was held on board 40 boats on Sunday 25 November, 2007, with participants coming from all over the Waikato region.
Players collected a card at each of the five destinations on Lake Karapiro, until at the end they had a full poker hand to play with. Hands cost $60 for one, $40 for a second and $10 for an individual card.
The winning hand was held by Karen Kemp with a full house – three aces and a pair of eights. She won an aluminium boat and outboard donated by Fish City and a boat trailer donated by Voyager Trailers.
Participants and their families were entertained by a band of St Peter’s school students and their teacher, playing a wonderful assortment of Irish music.
The event, which was hosted by Cambridge Charities Trust, was also supported by a wide range of businesses in the Waikato region who donated a whole host of fantastic spot prizes. They included Huka Falls Resort and Holiday Shoppe, Cambridge.
Event chairperson, John Galbraith, said the day was fantastic and all in aid of a worthy cause.
He added: “I would personally like to thank all those who donated goods and were involved in running the poker run. Their help was very much appreciated.”
Pru Etcheverry, Executive Director of the LBF, said the event offered a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the wonderful surroundings of Lake Karapiro.
“The Fish City Poker Run certainly was a creative new way to raise funds for the support of patients and their families going through the life changing experience of leukaemia or a related blood condition.”
