2008 events

Fundraising events has become the backbone of the LBF’s income and one which we are incredibly grateful for and reliant on.

2008 saw a great boost to our work with many memorable and exciting special events.

* In May a record $94,000 was raised for the LBF in the gut-busting Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge at SKYCITY. 230 brave firefighters from around New Zealand competed in a race up the 47 flights - or 1,029 Sky Tower steps - wearing full firefighting kit and breathing apparatus weighing up to 22kg.

* We made a huge splash this year with World Lymphoma Awareness Day (WLAD) which is held globally every year on September 15th. A massive amount of awareness was raised about this unknown cancer with the support of rugby legend Buck Shelford.

* Our annual Appeal Week fundraiser, Lunch for Leukaemia, was given an extra special launch this year by newly appointed national ambassador, Hilary Barry.

* The LBF were thrilled to be involved in the iconic Farmers Santa Parade in Auckland and Hamilton which raised a very merry $8,100.

*The year ended in a vey poignant way with a farewell fundraising bike ride for Tessa Hunt who lost her battle with Leukaemia. Husband Dave and a group of 8 mutual friends, rode the length of the South Island in her memory and raised money for leukaemia research and support.

We are enormously grateful to everyone who staged, or participated, in an event for us. Without you we would not be able to continue our vital support to patients and families living with blood cancers or conditions.
