Shave for a Cure 2010

Shave 2010 was a year of firsts. We had our first virtual Shavee, the Airpoints Fairy and our first ever Shave Tweet up in Auckland. We continued to have creative involvement from schools and universities including Auckland University, Massey University, Naenae College, Buckland's Beach Intermediate, Cashmere High School, Fernside Pre-school and many others.

Individual shavees

Auckland University – Engineering students
24 April –
Fifteen Auckland University engineering students held their fabulous Shave event in the quad. The sensational shave included a sausage sizzle and fundraising. The students all had a letter or symbol shaved into the back of their heads to spell AUENGINEERS!!!! They raised $1,195 on the day and the funds are still coming in.

Nardia Cooper
24 April – Resident Wellingtonian, Nardia Cooper’s Celebration Shave began weeks before the event with a Trademe auction and culminated with a sensational shave event at Dress-Smart Tawa. This inspirational woman raised close to $2,000.

Great Shave Tweet up
24 April – The Great Shave Tweet up was a success at One 2 One Cafe in Ponsonby, Auckland. 5 people shaved and raised over $1,000. The main shavee, Courtney Sit, was supported by her friends, sisters and parents. Local musicians lent some live music and there was lots of Tweeting.

Taupo Shave at Mulligans Bar
23 April –
Mulligans Bar in Taupo had a fantastic turn out with locals such as Classic Hits Breakfast Host Brendon Weatherley, Vanessa Winter and Betsy Prujean. Besty told us that the event in Taupo was amazing! What began as one person shaving turned into at least 12 people who shaved to show their support.

School shaves

843BBPicture-275Buckland's Beach Intermediate School
22 March –
20 plus Buckland’s Beach Intermediate School boys, some family members and the barber shaved their heads at Botany Town Centre. The teachers at Buckland’s Beach Intermediate held their Shave event earlier in the week in the student Hall. Deputy principal Ian Dickinson was one of the shaves. The school raised just over $3,638.

Cashmere High School
1 April –
Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker visited his old high school, Cashmere High School, to support the students’ Shave for a Cure event. In addition to Mayor Bob Parker, School Principal Mark Wilson, head boy Ryan Dsouza and an estimated 20 other students shaved. This is the third year in a row that Cashmere High School has supported Shave for a Cure with students donating a gold coin to wear mufti and shavees gaining sponsorship from family and friends. In total, the school has raised over $10,000 for the LBF.

A close shave at 30,000ft!
955Shave-Flght_1366-327 June – An Air New Zealand flight of over 100 passengers including TVNZ’s Matty McLean, Comedian Jeremy Corbett, US Boxing Icon Sugar Ray Leonard, Destination Queenstown CEO Tony Everitt and others participated in this hair-raising flight to Queenstown!

All passengers and crew aboard the Air New Zealand ‘Sky High Shave’ flight on 27 June from Auckland to Queenstown shaved their heads in support of the LBF.

They attended an awesome pre-flight party at the gate lounge where they were met by a DJ and delicious champagne breakfast. The fabulous North Shore Biba Boutique Salon staff did all the shaving. They arrived in Queenstown for Winterfest. The LBF called on the brave punters to invest in a good beanie, to keep their heads warm while they are in Queenstown.

24 April –
The Chiropractic & Sport team held a community fundraiser in Takanini. There were approximately 25 shavees including staff and patients from the clinic as well as members of the public who joined in on the day. The community day included face painting, a bouncy castle, Mad Butcher BBQ and Cut Above Academy did the clipping. The team has raised $2,400 so far.

 

Farmers Pakuranga
24 April – The team at Farmers Pakuranga shaved. There were 7 shavees. Store manager, Raylene Lockett helped organise the event and her 10-year-old daughter, Brooke Taylor, shaved her head. The event was held at Westfield Pakuranga shopping centre. The team held a cake stall on the day and collected donations. The team raised $4,000.

5Digital
24 April –
This shave was organised by a small team with big spirit. The 5 shavees included the staff, one of their sons who is one of our youngest shavees at just 20 months. The team raised a fabulous $1,180 and committed to donate $5 from every job placed with them between 23 April and 23 May.

Ogilvy PR
24 April –
This creative corporate shave had 4 shavees who raised $651 for the LBF.

Air New Zealand Cabin Crew
23 April – Six Air New Zealand crew shaved at Auckland Airport. The main shavee is currently receiving chemotherapy treatment and, anticipating that her hair would fall out, she decided to shave. She was supported by her fellow cabin crew. In addition, they fundraised in the airport including the Koru Lounge. 

AMP Financial Services
23 April – 12 AMP staff held a fun shave event in their staff room. The team raised approximately $2,000.

23 April –
The SkyTV team held a spirited shave event in the Sky Cafe. 9 staff shaved and 2 of the guys also had their legs waxed. The team collected over $250 on the day and have raised over $2,000.

 

Farmers Botany
22 April –
The team at Farmers Botany shaved. There were 5 shavees including store Manager Alastair Crouse who sported a crazy wig and orange shirt and at the last minute decided to lose his locks. They raised lots of funds which are still being counted.

Parliament Librarians Shave
19 April –
Parliament Librarians in Wellington shaved and dyed their hair raising over $1,000.

Bunnings Community Fun Day
10, 13 and 20 March –
As part of their annual Community Fun Day, Bunnings stores participated in Shave for a Cure. Participating stores were: Ashburton, Constellation Drive, Gisborne, Hamilton, Manukau, Mt Maunganui, Mt Roskill, Naenae, Nelson, Palmerston North, Porirua, Riccarton, Rotorua, Shirley, Whakatane and Whangarei. The wonderful events saw community groups with fundraising activities, performances and displays; as well as, sausage sizzles, bouncy castles for the kids, entertainers and Classic Hits in the stores.

Corporate Challenge Top 5
Businesses got involved. In 2010, we held the first ever National Business Review (NBR) Corporate Challenge. The Corporate Challenge Top 5 recognised and celebrated the Shave Week top corporate fundraisers.

During the NBR Corporate Challenge, over 31 organisations registered to Shave for a Cure. In 2010, Farmers came out ahead edging out other New Zealand businesses. The organisations competed for the title of top fundraiser and the chance to be featured on the 30 April cover of NBR. Thank you to businesses and their staffs for you marvellous support!
