On 15 July 2010, North Shore resident, Lia Bell began ‘Swim 10,000.’ She is attempting to swim 10,000 lengths of the 50 metre pool at the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health in Mairangi Bay.

Taking recreational swimming to the next level, the 34-year-old mother of one developed the idea as a way to demonstrate solidarity with the estimated 10,000 New Zealanders living with blood cancers and conditions and to raise $10,000 for the LBF.

Over the course of one year, 15 July to 14 July 2011, Lia will swim approximately 33 laps a day, 6 days a week, to complete the challenge. To support Lia's swim click here.

Though Lia lives with Cerebral Palsy she is committed to swimming the 10,000 lengths (500 kilometres) to demonstrate that anyone can be involved in their community no matter their personal circumstances.

She says: “Whilst I admit, 10,000 lengths does sound mind-boggling, I am determined to do it. I will gradually build it up and as my fitness increases it will become easier.”

Lia is taking on the challenge as her way of demonstrating her support to those living with blood cancers like leukaemia while getting fit. She says that the event is her way of spreading the word “to help the LBF continue the important, fantastic work that they do.”

We will post regular updates for you to track Lia's swim. Send her encouragement on our Facebook page or read about her swim on her blog here. {9c}
