Living with these diseases

'This is a Big Deal'

We have recently created a short film, ‘This is a Big Deal’, for patients and families. The film aims to demystify fears and concerns that may be felt when there has been a diagnosis of a blood cancer or condition in the family.

The film features interviews with Dr Bart Baker, Consultant Haematologist at Palmerston North Hospital; and Phil Kerslake, lymphoma survivor and author, discussing some of the common concerns that families face at this difficult time. Topics discussed include how to talk to friends and family about the diagnosis, working with the health care team and common issues that arise with work and finances. It is approximately 25 minutes long, and split into four parts.

The film is also available on DVD for loan from the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation. Please contact your local Support Services Coordinator by calling 0800 15 10 15 or click here.

In this section

Living with these diseases can significantly impact on your life and the lives of your loved ones. In this section we have tried to provide information which will help you and your family cope with a range of practical and emotional issues that may arise.

Those issues continue long after the shock of diagnosis. Patients have told us they struggle with topics ranging from telling other people the news and dealing with the changes to family routine, through to deciding when to return to work and planning for the future.

Support is essential for everyone living with the demands of a serious illness. There are a range of services and organisations available to provide practical, emotional and financial assistance for patients and families and the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation can help you access them.
