Volunteering
Become a volunteer
Volunteers are vital to our work and there are plenty of opportunities for involvement.
Giving time to support patients and families living with these diseases can be a rewarding experience. It is up to each person how much time they choose to give, and it can vary from a few hours a week, to just getting involved during Leukaemia Appeal Week activities.
Our volunteers come from all walks of life. Some get involved because they want to give something back to their local community, whilst others come to us because they have been personally touched by leukaemia, or a related blood condition.
Volunteering not only allows them to show their support and make a positive difference, it also gives them access to people who might have been through similar experiences.
We are always interested in hearing from people who would like to organise a local group in their area, if one doesn't already exist.
Volunteering provides ways to:
* Meet new people
* Give something back to the community and build a better society
* Learn new skills and gain experience
* Find new challenges
Opportunities
The tasks volunteers perform include, but are not limited to:
* Organising or assisting with fundraising events
* Helping out with the annual Appeal Week activities
* Assisting with office duties
* Helping patients with domestic duties, e.g. shopping
* Driving patients for treatment and clinic appoinments
* Visiting patients in the hospital or in their own home
Marlene's story
Marlene, a volunteer from Auckland, believes helping out at the LBF has brought a new dimension to her life.
"I got involved with the organisation 5 years ago after I lost my husband to Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML). I had lots of unanswered questions and needed to know more about the disease for my children and myself.
"At LBF I found some wonderful people who understood what I was going through, and who wanted, like me, to help wherever they could to make a difference. Volunteering has become a real passion for me and I love what I am doing.”
